Rakhis flood markets in Rajkot

Rajkot, July 24 (ANI): Markets in Rajkot city of Gujarat are flooded with different kinds of Rakhis.

Raksha Bandhan is a festival of Hindus, which celebrates the relationship between brothers and sisters on the full moon of month of Shravana, which is marked by tying of rakhi or holy thread on wrist of brothers, gift and sweets are also exchanged. This year, the festival falls on August 5.

As for the Rakhis on view in the markets of Rajkot, one can spot varieties numbering over hundreds.

However the most popular Rakhi of this season is the ZooZoo Rakhi.he ZooZoo themed Rakhi is based on the popular mobile company's ZooZoo advertisement, which was very popular during the IPL cricket tournament in South Africa.

"This time besides the traditional Rakhis we have got ZooZoo Rakhis which became popular after a television advertisement. I have bought this Rakhi for my brother because he really liked this character when this advertisement appeared on television," said Monika, a resident.usuf Makda, a dealer in Rakhis said that these symbolic threads were not only brought from various parts of India but also imported from other countries.

"This year Rakhis made of sandal wood, American diamonds and Austrian crystals are popular. Besides Chinese and Korean Rakhis made of beads are also in demand. Then Rakhis with sweets are also popular," he added.

The festivals origin dates back several centuries to the time when an upper caste Hindu queen Rani Roopmati, in times of war, sent a thread to Mughal ruler Humayun, requesting protection from the enemy.

King Humayun accepted the thread and honoured her request. Since then, the tradition continues in most of the families. (ANI)
