New Delhi, Jul 23: Former 'Infoscian' Nandan Nilekani took over as the head of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIAI) on Thursday, Jul 23.
UIAI is a government initiative aimed at creating and maintaining a national database of identity details of all the citizens.
Speaking to the reporters, Nadan Nilekani said, "We will be issuing the first set of identification numbers in 12 to 18 months."
He also disclosed that a 1978 batch Jharkhand cadre IAS officer, Ram Sevak Sharma will be taking over as the Secretary and CEO of the organisation.
He however, said that it will take more time for him to reveal further details about the project as it would take at least a few weeks to 'get the team together'.
Nandan Nilekani, the former co-chairman of IT major, Infosys, was appointed as the head of the UID project on July 13. He was picked by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh himself to head the initiative.
Nilekani who took up the responsibility gladly said that he always believed that technology must be used for nation's progress.
