Lincolnshire, July 23(ANI): A 15-year-old boy in Lincolnshire county of England has become first student to be convicted in a racially harassment case and now faces threat of a year in a young offenders' institute.
The 15-year-old boy, whose name has been withheld, has been convicted of 'racially aggravated harassment', which caused a 14-year-old classmate to attempt suicide by repeatedly calling her "wog, coon, nigger, gorilla and golliwog" for six months, The Telegraph reports.
Following the harassment, the victim had taken a mixture of pills and wrote a goodbye note to her family.
The conviction - the first for the crime over an incident in a school - has prompted questions over whether such bullying should be dealt with through criminal law.
According to reports, the boy had plagued the mixed-race girl with chants of 'white is right', 'kick them out' and 'fight, fight, fight'.
The girl's plight was disclosed when she attempted to kill herself in January when she took anti-stress pills and painkillers.
The boy, however, has denied the charge.
He was convicted after a six-hour trial and would be sentenced on August 13. He faces a maximum two-year detention and training order, including 12 months in a young offenders' institute. (ANI)
