MiG 29 fighter planes are faulty: AK Anthony
New Delhi, Jul 16: The Defence Ministry has finally said it, the MIG-29 fighter planes are faulty. The Defence Minter, AK Anthony shared the Russian finding that the Russian-made MiG 29 is structurally flawed.
MiG-29, which is seen as one of the most potent weapon the country has, is vulnerable to corrosion in the tail fin which leads to cracks. Russia discovered the fault after the Russian Air Force MiG-29 crashed in Dec 2008.
"There was a MiG 29 accident in Russia in December 2008. RAC MiG has intimated that corrosion on the fin root ribs has been identified as the cause of the crack development," Antony said.
However, there will be no steps to decommission the aircraft from IAF, he said.
"A repair scheme and preventive measures are in place and IAF has not encountered major problems concerning the issue," Antony said.
The statement which came as a written reply to Shri Prabhat Jha and Balavant Alias Bal Apte in Rajya Sabha is the first ever official statement acknowledging MiG aircraft's limitations.
