Eve-teased, girl commits suicide in Mumbai

Mumbai, Jul 14: In a shocking incident a 24-year-old Saujanya allegedly committed suicide after Mumbai police failed to act against those who eve teased her. She consumed sleeping pills in her area of Koparkhane in New Bombay.

Saujanya's family had already filed a complaint against the eve teasers, not once but twice on Feb 10 and 13 but no action was taken against them. The family claims that local corporators and the ward president, had been harassing Saujanya and her sister Snehal for over six months.

The more heart wrenching is that the police not only refuse to act on their complaint but they allegedly harassed and humiliated the entire family. The family also claimed that on May 4, when the Jhadavs finally confronted the harassers, a group of around 50 people including police allegedly entered their home and beat up the family while the girls fled and hid on the top floor.

Saujanya's mother had written a letter to the DG Maharashtra SS Virik naming the accused stating that he would be responsible for any consequences. Saujanya consumed sleeping pills on the Feb 27 and went into a coma from which she never recovered. She died on Tuesday, Jul 13 at Sion Hospital in central Mumbai.
