New Delhi, Jun 29: Just as the nation waits to see what the Supreme Court hearing on the PIL filed against Mayawati would be, the Union Home Minister P Chidambam took his turn to slam Uttar pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati's obsession with establishing statues and memorials with tax payers money.

“She is spending Rs 1000 crore on establishing statues of elephants and herself. Can there be something more shameful than this in Indian politics," he asked the gathering in his constituency Sivaganga while he was thanking them for his victory.

"Of what use will be the statues in UP. The Rs 1000 crore could have helped wipe out poverty of thousands of people, provide basic amenities and education," he said.

He observed that with the nature of the outcome in the Lok Sabha showed that the country is now rejecting caste politics and this was very evident in states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and sealed the fate of the leaders like Mulayam Singh Yadav who 'were practising caste politics'. He urged his voters to consider the work of the government rather than getting swayed by issues like 'casteism'.

However, the issues highlighted by the Home Minister leads to the inquiry as to what the Central government was doing with the Uttar Pradesh government. Considering the 'work the government does' would be tough for the voters if it does not take action against the State that misused public money and the power trusted upon them by the public.
