Nilekani quits Infy board, to head govt ID project

New Delhi, Jun 25: The co-chairman of Infosys Technologies, Nandan Nilekani has been reportedly called upon by the government to head the Unique Identification Authority (UIA) of India.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, on Thursday, Jun 25 invited Nilekani to chair an authority that will create a unique identification database of the Indian citizens. As the chairperson of UIA, Nilekani will be given the rank of a cabinet minister.

The authority will have many functions including responsibility to lay down plans and policies to implement the unique identification scheme in the country. Apart from this, it will operate, maintain and update the database.

According to media reports, Nilekani will be stepping down as co-chairman and board member of Infosys Technologies after he takes over as the chairman of the UIA.
