The Airport Intelligence Unit (AIU) acting on a tip-off detained her, upon her arrival from London at the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport for reportedly carrying jewellery and diamonds worth between Rs 51 lakh to one crore which was undeclared. Mafatlal had reportedly declared they were worth only Rs 20 lakh.
She was booked under relevant sections of Indian Customs Act.
Meanwhile, Sheetal's lawyer Satish Manshinde said that she was under custody for 2 days. He alleged that the incident was a total vendetta against Sheetal. "My wife is at the airport for not declaring her jewellery, which is not true. Her jewellery is worth Rs 51 lakhs. She frequently travels abroad," said Atulya Mafatlal, Sheetal's husband.
The Mafatlals have been fighting over the property for years. Atulya and Sheetal on one side and Atulya's brother Ajay and mother Madhuri on the other. Atulya had earlier alleged that his mother had misappropriated funds.
There are also reports that Ajay is actually Aparna, who is Atulya's sister who underwent sex change operation allegedly to claim her right to the family property.
Since the jewellery which Sheetal had in her bags were worth less than Rs 1 crore and duty less than Rs 30 lakh, according to section 135 of the Customs Act, she can file for bail. However the public prosecutor Arun Gupte said that Sheetal"s non-declaration of dutiable goods when she arrived at 1 am from London was a non-bailable offence punishable with seven years jail and fine.
