Mumbai, Jun 9: The Mumbai High Court granted bail to socialite and business tycoon Sheetal Mafatlal who was charged by the Indian Customs department for under-declaring jewelry.

The court on Tuesday, Jun 9 heard her bail plea and granted bail on surety of Rs 5 lakhs. She has been directed to mark attendance twice a week along with paying customs duty of Rs 18 lakhs. The court has also asked Mumbai-based socialite to not leave the country.

Sheetal Mafatlal was arrested on Monday, Jun 8 and was sent to judicial custody till Jun 12 by a local court. She was detained on her arrival from London, carrying jewelery and diamonds worth between Rs 51 lakh to Rs 1 cr. The Customs authorities claimed that she under-declared the jewelry by declaring its worth at Rs 20 lakh.

Mafatlal's lawyer, Satish Manshinde who earlier alleged that his client's arrest was due to 'vendetta by some disgruntled elements', said that Mafatlal's fundamental rights have been violated and that the authorities only wasted the time of the court with this case.
