Chennai, Jun 9: Expressing his appreciation to the toppers in the state's SSLC exams, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, M Karunanidhi distributed free laptops to 1100 students who bagged the top thousand ranks, apart from increasing the size of cash prizes for the top rank holders.
To start of the scheme for the year, the CM gave laptops to 10 students from Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts at Secretariat on Monday, Jun 8.
The cash prices for the first three rank holders have been hiked to Rs. 25,000, Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 15,000 respectively from 2009 onwards. The cash prices which were only Rs. 7,500, Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 5,000 was ordered to be hiked by the CM on Monday, Jun 8.
This includes the rank holders in State and district level. Beside this, the government will bear the expenses of higher studies of the those students.
The CM also introduced the scheme to the rank-holders in the Matriculation stream and marked its beginning by handing over cheques to four students who bagged the first three ranks in the examination.
The cash prices accounted to a total of Rs. 2.45 lakh, an official release said.
However all these schemes are limited only to those students who studied in the Tamil medium of instruction. The scheme which was launched in 2008 is aimed at boosting the interest of the students to learn in their mother tongue.
