New Delhi, Jun 2: Meira Kumar who was nominated by the UPA government on Monday, Jun 1 for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker has reportedly filed her nomination for the post on Tuesday, Jun 2.
Meira Kumar has emerged as UPA's favourite for the post and is likely to be elected for the post. Meira Kumar has already resigned as the Union Minister for Water Resources.
"Yes I have resigned (as Union Water Resources Minister). UPA has nominated me for the post of (Lok Sabha) Speaker," Kumar told reporters on Monday, Jun 1.
Both UPA and Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA are backing Meira Kumar as the Speaker.
If she secures the post, the daughter of former deputy prime minister Jagjivan Ram will be the country"s first woman as well as Dalit to occupy the post of the Lok Sabha Speaker.
