Ludhiana, May 31 (ANI): Families in Ludhiana, whose wards are studying in Australia, have expressed anguish over the recent attacks on Indian students pursuing higher studies Down Under.

Suresh Saluja and Rama Saluja, whose son is studying in Australia, demanded safety measures for young Indian scholars.

"For the past five years, nothing of this had ever happened. The doors of the houses remained open but nothing of this had ever happened. We have asked him to come back home for some time," said Suresh.

Ranter Bassi, whose children are also studying in Australia, also shared similar sentiments

"We saw it on television. We were shocked to see what is happening there. Indian students are being attacked. We want that arrangements should be made for their security," said Bassi, another parent.

The series of attacks on Indian students have angered the family members who question the Australian Government's failure in providing protection to their wards.

The attacks have been occurring for more than a year but came into focus last weekend when a student named Sravan Kumar Theerthala was left fighting for his life after being stabbed with a screwdriver.

Police have repeatedly denied that racial hatred was a factor in the attacks by contending that Indian students were often simply in the wrong time at the wrong place as they travelled home late at night with items such as mobile phones and IPods. (ANI)
