New Delhi, May 31: Congress is set to create history in the Indian democracy as it is likely to nominate Meira Kumar, a Dalit leader for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, opted for Meira Kumar to preside over the 15th Lok Sabha. She said that this would facilitate the task of enacting women's quota in the legislature.
Meira Kumar will be the first Dalit woman Speaker. She was a cabinet member in the UPA's first tenure and held portfolios for social justice. Abhishek Singhvi, AICC spokesman said, "Congress would be creating a historical milestone by opting for the first dalit woman Speaker. In the past also, Congress chose the first woman PM, youngest PM, first woman President."
Sources revealed that Meira Kumar was always first choice for speakership, although it is a tough task of managing the House. It also said that managing the House should not be a problem as Meira Kumar commands for respect because of her dignified presence and being Babu Jagjivan Rams political legatee.
Meira Kumar being a Dalit woman can bring big assets to the Congress party as it will restrain the aggressive members who are not so used to female presence in the Lok Sabha Speaker chair.
Meira Kumar has successfully contested elections from three states in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi in 1985. This proves that she is not new to the rough and tumble politics. She has worked very hard in previous UPA's regimes in wooing the job reservations in the private sector.
