Indian American girl wins US spelling bee contest

Washington, May 29: 13-year-old Indian American student, Kavya Shivashankar made history by winning Scripps National Spelling Bee trophy. She is the third Indian-American kid in line to win the championship.

The word which helped her to bag the price was 'Laodicean'. She won the glittering gold trophy and a cash prize of $30,000, along with several other prizes worth $11,000.

Eight Indian-Americans have now won the title, including six of the past 10 winners. This is the fourth time Kavya is contesting in the bee contest. She had finished 10th, eighth and fourth over last three years.
