Thiruvananthapuram, May 24: The South-West monsoon hit the state of Kerala on Saturday, 8 days ahead of its usual schedule. Usually the monsoon arrives in the 'Gods own country' on Jun 1.

A B Mazumdar of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said, "Though the monsoon arrived early in Kerala, it will be hard to say whether it will hit Maharashtra earlier than its usual time, since the wind currents are weak at present." As per its normal schedule, the monsoon reaches Maharashtra coast on Jun 7.

Monsoon which reached Andaman islands on Wednesday, May 20, entered Arabian Sea on Monday, May 22 as per the normal timetable. But it picked up speed to reach south Kerala well in advance. It has also reached some parts of south Tamil Nadu, most parts of south-west and east-central Bay of Bengal and some parts of the west-central and north-east Bay of Bengal.
