Forget Symonds, it's my turn to capitalise on opportunities: Watson

Sydney, May 21 (ANI): Shane Watson showed little sympathy for troubled all rounder Andrew Symonds after the Queenslander was left out of the Ashes touring squad, saying that he will be doing his utmost to capitalise on the opportunity created by Symonds's repeated off-field infringements.

Watson and Test incumbent Andrew McDonald will do battle for the all-rounder spot during the Ashes series, starting from July 8.

"Good," Watson replied when asked how he'd feel standing in the way of Symonds' recall. "It means I'm playing Test cricket and performing well.

"It's been an interesting battle between me and Andrew Symonds. Initially I got my opportunity in the [2006-07] Ashes, and unfortunately I got injured and he made the most of that opportunity and has been performing well over the last couple of years," he said.

"But of recent times he hasn't helped himself in regards to what he's been doing, and I've just got to make the most of the opportunity that's presented itself," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Watson, as saying.

Symonds has not given up hope of regaining his Test place, saying through his manager that he would work towards earning a place next summer.

Watson, chosen subject to fitness, is determined to put a string of injury troubles behind him and fulfil his immense potential as a world-class all-rounder - and make the Australian spot his own. ANI)
