Iran frees US journalist Roxana Saberi
Washington, May 12: Roxana Saberi, an Iranian-American journalist who was jailed for five months in Iran allegedly for spying was freed on Monday, May 11, after an Appeals court suspended her 8 year prison sentence.
Roxana Saberi, a 32-year-old dual Iranian-American citizen, met her parents outside Evin prison after the court cut her jail term to a two-year suspended sentence. Saleh Nikbakht, Saberi's lawyer said to media, "She was reunited with her father and mother. They left for their house."
Arrest of Roxana was a major set back for Obama administration which was trying to engage Iran in a dialogue. Washington had called the charges against Saberi baseless and repeatedly demanded her release. Saberi had worked as a freelance journalist for several organisations including National Public Radio and the British Broadcasting Corp (BBC).
