Swine flu alert raised to level 5
Geneva, Apr 30: World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday, Apr 30 raised the pandemic alert for the Swine flu to 'five', the second highest level. This means that the global outbreak of the disease is nearing. WHO said that the phase 5 alert means there is sustained human to human spread in atleast 2 nations.
Margaret Chan, the WHO Director-General said the Swine flu outbreak is a public health emergency of 'pandemic potential' because the virus can pass from human to human.
WHO has confirmed human cases of swine flu in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Britain, Israel, New Zealand and Spain. Mexico and the US have reported deaths. 159 deaths are confirmed in Mexico, were the flu is believed to have originated and nearly 2,500 are infected.
