Chennai, New Delhi, Apr 27: The Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi broke his 'fast' over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue after getting assurance from the Central government for effective measures to solve the issue.

Meanwhile the Ministry of External Affairs said that Sri Lanka has halted offensive operation. Lanka has also declared that heavy weapons will not be used and operation is now confined to rescuing trapped civilians.

P Chidambaram, the Union Home Minister welcomed Sri Lanka's decision. He said it is the result of Indian government's efforts. He also assured of providing humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka.

Karunanidhi began his indefinite hunger strike in Chennai at the Anna Memorial on Monday, Apr 27 to register his protest against the 'cruel acts' against Tamils in Sri Lanka, prompting a concerned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to phone him to say India was trying to influence Colombo to end its hostilities.
