Melbourne, Apr 25: Tennis Australia (TA) has said that it will not be sending its Davis Cup team to India for next month's ties because of security reasons.
TA announced on Saturday, Apr 25 that Australia will skip their Davis Cup tie against India in Chennai scheduled to take place next month citing security concerns. This may cause one year suspension of the team from the competition.
Earlier, TA had asked the International Tennis Federation's (ITF) to shift the tie out of India. However, ITF on Friday, Apr 24 rejected the appeal saying that the tie will happen in Chennai as decided upon by the Davis Cup committee and confirmed to be a safe place by the Indian authorities.
"The ITF decision has left us with no other option. We cannot send the team. It is extremely disappointing. It would be irresponsible of us to send our players into an area of such high risk," said TA president Geoff Pollard.
