12-hour bandh in TN over Sri Lankan issue

Chennai, Apr 23: The statewide 12-hour dawn to dusk strike called by ruling Dravida Munetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu on the Srilankan Tamils issue began on Thursday, Apr 23 morning. DMK called for a day-long strike to pressurise the government to take immediate steps for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

Shops remained closed and buses and auto-rickshaws were off the roads as trade unions have extended support to the strike which commenced at 6 am. However, train services were not affected, railway sources said.

However the flight services are not affected. The Tamil cinema industry too has announced suspension of all activities for the day and shows in cinema theatres have been cancelled.

Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK chief, but rejected the appeal by TN CM Karunanidhi and his party and called strike 'a farce and a drama'.
