Karunanidhi calls for strike in TN for SL
Chennai, Apr 22: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK supremo M Karunanidhi has called for a 12 hour strike in the state on Thursday, Apr 23 to protest against the violence in Sri Lanka.
This move puts pressure on the UPA government to seriously bid for a permanent ceasefire in the neighbouring country in order to save the Tamil civilians. The Tamil civilians are caught amidst the battle between the Sri Lankan army and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants.
Tamil Nadu's DMK is a key ally of Congress. DMK chief has also urged all the political parties to join the strike.
The increase in the number of civilian fleeing from the LTTE controlled areas continue and the government reports quote a massive figure of 63,000 civilians. The Tigers' leader, Prabhakaran is suspected to be hiding somewhere in the coastal areas.
