Kashmiri silverware, a big hit abroad
Srinagar, Apr 16: Along with Kashmiri winter wear and carpets, the traditional silverware with intricate artwork is finding great favour in the international market along with its increasing popularity in the domestic market.
The artwork on silver item is known as 'naqash' which covers a wide range of silver items. Popular among them are flower vases, chinars, ornamental picture-frames, cigarette cases, tumblers and others. For years these are being used and liked by Kashmiri people.
Kashmiri silverware, especially ornamental picture-frames and other items are in great demand in European countries.
Tufail Ahmad, a shop owner and dealer of silverware says,"We export it also. We also make items of traditionally Kashmiri houseboats, chinars kangariyas and samovars. They are exported to Europe."
The main production centers of silverware in Kashmir are areas in the old city of Srinagar.
