Lucknow, Apr 12: Uttar Pradesh government, under Mayawati defended the arrest of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Pilibhit candidate Varun Gandhi for the coming Lok Sabha polls, under National Security Act (NSA). In an affidavit filed before Supreme Court of India, the UP govt said that Varun is a threat to public order.
Mayawati government accused BJP's young face of causing fear among the Muslim community. Many see the strong defence by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government was meant to polarise the electorate. Maya's tough stand against Varun and BJP is gaining appreciation among the Muslim community, at the same time there are signs of rising sympathy for the saffron party in Pilibhit and other constituencies of eartern UP.
Varun had earlier challenged his detention under NSA in SC. However the District Magistrate Ajay Chauhan, said in his affidavit, that Varun should have presented his case before the Advisory Board, which scrutinises the legality of preventive detentions under NSA, rather than the SC.
