Putrajaya, Apr 9 (ANI): The youth wing of the Malaysian Indian Congress has said that it will send two post mortem reports on suspected car thief A. Kugan to Australia for advice.

MIC Youth Adviser S. Vell Paari said: "We are sending the reports to Australia as the Health Ministry's 10-man independent committee came out with a different finding."

The Star quoted Vell Paari as saying that the MIC Youth will discuss the next course of action with Kugan's family.

He said the committee had reported that Kugan died from acute congestion of the lungs due to acute inflammation of the heart muscles, compounded by blunt force trauma.

Health director-general Dr Ismail Merican had said the deceased was found to have an underlying acute myocarditis (inflammation of heart muscle) and the blunt force trauma could have led to acute renal failure.

"This (renal failure) had aggravated the acute myocarditis, resulting in acute pulmonary oedema or lung congestion. As for injuries on Kugan's back, they were in fact patterned imprint injuries which had been caused by a blunt and flexible object," he had said.

Kugan, 22, was detained by police on January 15 this year for alleged car theft, but died five days later while in police custody.

An autopsy was performed on January 21 by the head of Serdang Hospital forensic unit, Dr Abdul Karim Tajuddin, but the family then requested Universiti Malaya Medical Centre to conduct a second post-mortem, which was performed by Dr Prashant Samberkar on January 25.

Vell Paari, who is the chairman of the MIC Community Unity Committee, said they were puzzled as the two post mortem reports did not mention myocarditis as the possible cause of death.

"Kugan was in police custody for five days. We want to know whether he (Kugan) showed any symptoms which were suggestive of myocarditis," he asked?

He said that MIC Youth would liase with Kugan's family and would provide legal assistance if needed after getting the specialist findings from Australia. (ANI)
