PM to begin campaign in blast-hit Assam on Apr 7

Guwahati, Apr 7: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will kick start his election campaign in the state of Assam which was ripped by four deadly blast on Monday, Apr 6. The blast left atleast 9 dead and 60 injured.

Undeterred by the serial blasts Prime Minister will visit Assam, the state which he represents in Rajya Sabha and address an election rally at Dispur. He is also scheduled to attend a public meeting in Dibrugarh, about 400 kms from Guwahati. This is the first election meeting by Manmohan Singh, who underwent a cardiac bypass surgery on Jan 24. Congress party's Prime Ministerial candidate, Manmohan Singh will also visit Uttarakhand as part of his election campaign.

The first blast was triggered at a busy market area of Maligaon on the outskirts of Guwahati around 1.40 pm killing 8 people and injuring 50. Within two, hours another blast was reported from Dhekiajuli in Sontipur district in which three people are injured.

In the third blast in the evening, terrorists threw a grenade at the Mancachar police station in Dhubri district, killing a constable. Another grenade lobbed in the Garo Basti area in Udalguri district did not explode. A fourth bomb explosion rocked Karbi Anglong district, injuring two people.

Assam government suspect ULFA's hand in the blast which occurred a day ahead of the terror outfit's 'Flag raising day'. Intelligence report suggest that two ULFA members have recently sneaked to the city to carry out blasts.
