Washington, Mar 28 (ANI): A fresh proposal by Chicago Alderman Edward Burke may lead to the traffic controllers getting out even more information from errant motorists with the help of the cameras at 132 city intersections.

These cameras, which currently enforce 100 dollars red light violations, would also be used to nab motorists whose cars are, DC uninsured.

Talking to the FOXNews.com, Washington officials agreed that they are willing to consider a similar program.

Burke believes that the increased enforcement would not only lead to safer roadways in Chicago, but the 90 dollars per violation rule would also raise nearly 10 million dollars a year for the city.

"I favour using who run red lights...I believe it would also be a responsible use of these cameras to catch more than just motorists cameras to try and reduce the number of motorists who flaunt the law by driving without insurance," Burke said in January when announcing his proposal.

Chicago's Transportation Committee had held Burke's proposal last week for further debate.

Last week, InsureNet, a Michigan-based company that provides instant insurance verification, pointed out to the City Council's Transportation Committee that by citing all vehicles that are uninsured, up to 200 million dollars could be generated even after the Chicago police levies a fine of 300 dollars fine, well below the state fine of 500 dollars.

According to the Insurance Research Council, nearly 14 percent of motorists nationwide drove uninsured last year, and that figure is expected to rise to 16.1 percent next year based on current unemployment rate projections. (ANI)
