Missionaries of Charity has change of guard
Kolkata, March 26 (ANI): Mother Teresa's Order, the Missionaries of Charity, has had a change of guard with Sister Prema taking over as Superior General, Missionaries of Charity, after Sister Nirmala opted to step down citing poor health.
The Missionaries of Charity Chapter elects the Superior General every six years.
Sister Nirmala, who was first elected in 1996 and re-elected in 2002, carried all the responsibilities related to the position she held for her total 12-year duration.
According to sources, Sister Nirmala was nominated this time too. ut she chose to step down voluntarily citing health reasons.
Sister Prema was one of the Counselors of the Chapter when Sister Nirmala was first elected as Superior General.
Sister Liza was another Counselor at the time.
Sister Prema, who is of German origin, has an association of 25 years with the Missionaries of Charity (MoC) and has worked at its different centres across the world.
According to Sunita Kumar, spokesperson for the MOC, Sister Prema is in her 50s and is expected to carry on the work of the Order competently and efficiently.
The MOC is expected to make a formal announcement on Friday. By Ajitha Menon(ANI)
