Bangalore, Mar 22 (ANI): Industrialist Vijay Mallya, who bought the belongings of Mahatma Gandhi for 1.8 million dollar at an auction in New York, has sought government's approval for waiver of import duty on the memorabilia of historical value and national sentiments.

Taking to mediapersons here on Saturday, Mallya said that he is waiting for necessary permissions from the government to bring the memorabilia back on the Indian soil.

"The memorabilia or the treasures are now in my possession. I will bring these to India as soon as I receive necessary permissions from the government. I intend to apply to the relevant ministries for waiver of any import duties. I am looking forward to the proud moment when Gandhi's memorabilia can be rightly returned to Indian soil," he added.

He further said that these memorabilia would be displayed at a prominent place where people from all walks of life can see them.

Mallya bought Gandhi's five personal objects, including the iconic round eyeglasses. (ANI)
