London, Mar 18: A Sikh temple in east London has been gutted in a suspected racist attack in Britain on Tuesday, Mar 17.
The Gurdwara was set ablaze by a man, who entered the temple and managed to escape just before flames were first seen, eye witnesses said. A group of women had spotted the intruder. The Gurdwara
Sikh Sangat was opened in 1979.
Shocked worshippers arrived from all over London to witness the tragic blaze. Many were close to tears watching the flames sweep through the upper floor of the ornately decorated Gudwara Sikh Sangat with its classical pillared entrance.
Firefighters were called to the blaze at the building in Harley Grove, Bow, east London, shortly after the incident. However, no injuries were reported from the scene.
A criminal investigation has been launched and police and fire investigators are treating the blaze as suspicious.
