Naveen Chawla to take up CEC post
New Delhi, Mar 4: Pratibha Devisingh Patil, the President of India on Wednesday, Mar 4 appointed NaveenChawla as the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India. He will be next CEC from Apr 20 as the present CEC N Gopalaswamy will retire on Apr 20, 2009.
Chawla ran into controversy after Gopalaswamy recommended the President to remove him from office. But President rejected CEC's recommendation. Lok Sabha polls will begin on Apr 16 and conclude on May 16, which means a major part of elections to the 15th Lok Sabha will be under Chawla's supervision.
