Tata Metalik to move out of Bengal?

Kolkata, Feb 24: After the Tata Motors relocated its Nano project from West Bengal due to continuous protest from the farmers and the Trinamool Congress, now Tata Metaliks another Tata group company is thinking of relocation. The West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC), which has been acquiring land in Kharagpur for Tata Metaliks' diversification project, has already initiated dialogue with the company.

The WBIDC had started acquiring land three years before. The land prices which were around Rs 3.5-4 lakh is now doubled to 8 lakhs. WBIDC authorities have already asked the company to pay more. Meanwhile the company sources said it has sought 15 days time to look into the matter. At the same time they said that the company which has already waited four years for land will not wait more to get it. Tata Metaliks have already paid 9 crores to WBIDC.

A pig iron producer, Tata Metaliks has pig iron facilities at Kharagpur in West Bengal and Redi in Maharashtra. The company has an annual capacity of 650,000 tonnes. The company sources said that a discussion with the Karnataka government was held for an iron ore mining lease and for setting up of a plant. The state high-level clearance committee has already given approval for a steel plant in Haveri district.
