New Delhi, Feb 20: Cutting across the party lines, 58 members of Rajya Sabha joined hands to remove Calcutta High Court Judge Soumitra Sen for misappropriating Rs 32 lakh.

All the members of RS submitted petition to Rajya Sabha chairman and Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari for impeachment of Justice Soumitra Sen on grounds of financial misconduct.

Members of BJP, CPM, CPI, NCP, RJD, TDP, AIADMK and JD(U), submitted a petition jointly signed by them to Ansari.

Justice Sen had allegedly received Rs 32 lakh as a court-appointed receiver in 1993 in a lawsuit between the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Shipping Corporation of India over the supply of fire bricks.

The petition, the first step in the process of impeachment, has been based on the recommendation of Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for removal of Justice Sen, they said. A three-member committee appointed by the CJI held Justice Sen guilty.
