The 38-year-old Indian worked for an Italian company in Herat. The abductors had demanded a ransom of $150,000 for his release, but after receiving no help from the government or the company, there was a deadlock in the negotiations to save Simon.

It is learnt that Simon fell ill and died in captivity. Vasanthi, Simon's wife had pleaded the Indian government for help. "We cannot give the money. I beg the Indian government to protect my husband," she said.
