New Delhi, Feb 9: Government of India on Monday, Feb 9 said, Simon Paramanathan, the Indian kidnapped by terrorist outfit in Afghanistan is dead. Reports suggest that Simon was abducted on Oct 13, 2008 by a group named 'Mujahideen'.
Sources said the Indian Embassy in Kabul informed Simon's brother Subramanyan that his brother died in Taliban hands. Simon hailed from Villupuram in Tamil Nadu district. The 38-year-old Indian worked for an Italian company in Herat. The abductors had demanded a ransom of $150,000 for his release, but after receiving no help from the government or the company, there was a deadlock in the negotiations to save Simon.
It is learnt that Simon fell ill and died in captivity. Vasanthi, Simon's wife had pleaded the Indian government for help. "We cannot give the money. I beg the Indian government to protect my husband," she said.
Sources said that Simon's body would not be returned back to his family as the son of the abductor is still in Afghan jail.
