New York, Jan 24 (ANI): A Greenwich Village bakery owner has sparked outrage after he sold 'Drunken Negro Face' cookies during President Barack Obama's inauguration.

Ted Kefalinos, who runs Lafeyette French Pastry Bakers, on 26 Greenwich Ave., has received complaints and crank calls for having so named the cookies.

He had made a batch of the chocolate treats on Martin Luther King day, hoping to make his customers smile, but he instead sparked outrage and earned himself the disfavour of neighbouring store owners.

"It's not the 1920s or 1930s, we have to get a little bit civilized," the New York Daily News quoted Nandini Shelly, who owns a tobacco store down the block, as saying.

"It's not OK, and he's supposed to think a little bit before he says something," she stated.

Kefalinos, who admits he is not a fan of the new president's policies, made about two dozen of the cookies on Monday and sold them all.

"I'm sorry that people were offended by the cookie," Kefalinos said.

"We were just trying to make a large number of people happy, and instead we made a large number of people confused and angry," he added.

He received a call from one person who told him to board up his windows this weekend, and was also informed that some parents, who pick their children up from a nearby school and often stopped at his shop, plan a boycott.

"You should choose better words because you upset a lot of people," Bangally Jagana, who owns an African store next door to the bakery, said.

"This time I think he pushed the button too much, but I will still spend money there because we're neighbours," he added. (ANI)
