Oz Open: Bopanna-Nieminin in Round 2

Melbourne, Jan 23: Rohan Bopanna, Indian Davis Cupper and his Finnish partner Jarkko Nieminin entered second round of the men's doubles round of the Australian Open. They defeated Spanish pair of Marcel Granollers and Santiago Ventura 3-6 6-4 6-1 in Melbourne on Friday, Jan 23.

Bopanna and Niemimin took almost one hour and 13 minutes to crush their opponents. Bopanna is the third Indian to have reached the second round of Australian Open 2009, joining Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.

Bopanna and Nieminin will face Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador and Tommy Robredo of Spain in the second round. Bhupathi and Paeas entered second round in men's doubles on Thursday, Jan 22. Bhupathi-Mark Knowles pair defeated the unseeded pair of Mikhail Youzhnny and Mischa Zverev 6-2, 6-2, in the first round of the draw.

Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes defeated the unseeded pair of Fabrice Santoro and Allgro 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
