London, Dec 17 (ANI): Having diabetes after being diagnosed with cancer elevates the risk of death by 40 percent, say researchers.

The study's boffins reckon that the reduced chance of surviving the disease could be because diabetes patients receive less aggressive cancer care.

With the review of 48 studies, researchers also found that the risk of dying varied depending on the cancer, suggesting that there could be some as-yet unknown element of diabetes, which increases the severity of some cancers, reports the Telegraph.

The boffins found that diabetics were 61 per cent more likely to die of breast cancer than non-diabetics and 32 per cent more likely to die from colon cancer.

The study has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The authors of the research, including Bethany Barone, from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, who led the review, called for more research to determine the extent to which diabetes can affect the chance of dying from cancer and if there is any way to cut the number of deaths. (ANI)
