RIL, ONGC surge; Sensex tests 10K

Mumbai, Dec 15: Surge in oil and gas heavyweights like Reliance Industries and ONGC helped BSE Sensex to touch 10,000 mark, while the Nifty hit 3000 points. Bombay Stock Exchange"s Sensex closed at 10,003.98, up 171.59 points or 1.75 per cent. National Stock Exchange"s Nifty ended at 3050.60, up 2.33 per cent or 69.40 points.

BSE Midcap Index closed 2.50 per cent up and BSE Smallcap Index ended 3.25 per cent higher. Major gains in ONGC, Grasim Industries, HDFC, Tata Motors, ACC and NTPC propped up the Sensex. While Sterlite Industries, HDFC, Reliance Communication, Reliance Infrastructure and Larsen & Toubro were losers for the day.

BSE Sensex touches 10,000 points

At 01:00 pm the BSE Sensex went up 7 points to 9,839 and the Nifty gained 11 points at 2,992. BSE Midcap and Small Cap indices advanced 2-3 per cent. The lead players at the afternoon session are ONGC, Tata Motors, TCS, NTPC, Infosys, Seimens, Suzlon Energy and Cairn India. HCL Technologies surged 14.35 per cent.

BSE Sensex, NSE Nifty up: IT stocks lead

At 11:40 am, National Stock Exchange"s Nifty was at 3004.50, up 23.30 points or 0.78 per cent. The broader index touched an intra-day high of 3006.80 and a low of 2963.30. Bombay Stock Exchange"s Sensex was at 9860.08, up 27.69 points or 0.28 per cent. The index touched a high of 9879.42 and a low of 9790.31.

Mixed cues: Quiet opening for Markets

Markets had a quiet opening on Tuesday, Dec 16 follwoing mixed cues from Asian markets. At 9:56 am, the Sensex rose just 6.92 points to 9,839 and the Nifty gained 0.5 points at 2,981. However midcap and small cap stocks have continued their uptrend. The CNX Midcap 100 went up 0.82 pc to 3,656.

Major gainers in the opening trade are ONGC, NTPC, SBI, TCS, Infosys, L&T, HCL Technologies, ACC, Unitech, Satyam and Hindalco. But Bharti Airtel, Reliance Industries, Sterlite Industries, Reliance Communication, SAIL, HDFC, DLF, Reliance Infrastructure and HDFC Bank lost ground.

HCL Technologies surged nearly 8.5 per cent, as the company completed its Axon acquisition at USD 651 million versus USD 785 million, which was the beginning valuation .

Asian markets are trading mixed. Shanghai, Nikkei, Taiwan and Jakarta fell 0.6-1.8 pc. However, Hang Seng and Kospi gained 0.2-0.8 pc.
