London, Dec 3 : A casino that wanted to show its appreciation to its loyal customers almost ended at a loss, when free vouchers meant for 1,000 people were sent out to 55,000 people.
Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course wanted to reward them with free slot machine playing credits that offered 100 dollars n slots credits per week from December 1 through January 4.
The offer also included two free visits to the buffet at the casino in Grantville, about 15 miles northeast of Harrisburg, said Penn National spokesman Eric Schippers.
If all those who got the vouchers claim their reward, the casino could end up losing 29 million dollars, so on December 1, the casino executives decided to partially honour the offer after frantically calling tens of thousands of customers during the weekend.
The mistake was first reported by WGAL-TV, which said customers had already started trying to take advantage of the offer.
Schippers revealed the error had been committed by the direct mailing company used by the casino, and that in order to cut its loss the casino is offering 100 dollars in credits per customer and two buffet passes, if they are redeemed by Christmas.
"Rather than say 'Sorry, it was an error,' we've said 'Sorry, let's try to come up with what we think is a reasonable redemption plan,'" the Telegraph quoted him as saying.
