WB, NB emerge champion in Boys Cadet and Sub-junior event's

Vijayawada, Nov 30 (UNI) West Bengal and North Bengal emerged champions in the 70th Sub Junior National Table Tennis Championship here today.

The final of the Cadet event played between Subhendu Shaw of West Bengal and Utkarsh Gupta of Delhi ended in an exciting finish with 4-1.

Subhendu after winning the first set 11-9, lost the second to Utkarsh 8-11. Undaunted by the reverse, Subhendu swung into the attack with array of defence splitting passes with forehand and backhand shots and won the next three sets to clinch the match and the title at 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8.

In the Sub-junior Boys final, Rajib Sarkar trounced Abhishek Yadav of PSPB-A in straight sets at 11-6, 11-9, 13-11, 11-5 and emerged a worthy champion. Abhishek offered a semblance of resistance only in the third set when he took the game to the tie-breaker.

In the Cadet Girls final, Anushka Dutta of North Bengal bagged the title by defeating K Spoorthy of Andhra Pradesh in a thrilling encounter after losing the first two sets at 8-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-3, 11-2.

Mallika Bhandarkar (MAH-A) emerged champion in the Sub-junior girls encounter when she defeated Reeth Rishya of Tamil Nadu in an exciting match, where the fortunes fluctuated before Mallika romped home in a pulsating finish at 11-9, 13-11, 11-4, 6-11, 7-11, 6-11, 13-11. In a sea-saw encounter, Risha fought back gallantly and restored parity after losing the first three sets, before ending up losing in the tie-breaker.

The Sub-junior individual doubles titles went to PSPB-A in Boys section and West Bengal in Girls section.

In the Boys final, Sudhansu Grover and Abishek Yadav of PSPB-A defeated Rajib Sarkar and Subham Basak of North Bengal in straight sets at 11-5, 11-9, 11-6 while Camelia Sil and S Mukherjee of West Bengal beat Narshima Priya and Reeth Rishya of Tamil Nadu in four sets at 10-12, 11-8, 11-6, 11-9 in the Girl's section.
