Film buffs enjoy a wide range of foreign movies at IFFI

Panaji, Nov 30 (UNI) Six films from Cannes film festival, seven from Montreal film festival, three from Venice film festival and a lot more from other film festivals has added charm to the International Film festival of India 2008 which kick started here last week.

"We have very good participation in the competition, World of the Cinema and Indian panorama sections. About 55 films screened here have been screened at various film festivals the world over and many of them have won many awards also at these festivals," Directorate of Film Festival's Deputy Director Shankar Mohan told UNI.

Another important feature of the IFFI was that some of the films like Bangladeshi filmmaker Abu Sayeed's latest work "Rupantor" had their world premier in this festival, he said. Dada Saheb Phlake Award winner Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Oru Pennum Randannum and well known Malayalam director T V Chandran's Vilapangalkkappuram had their Indian premier at the festival.

Raja Menon's Barah Aana,Anjan Dutt's Chaurastra - Crossroads of Love, Vera Chawala's Death Without Consent were all world premiers.

Tandoori Love by Oliver Paulus was the Asia premier at the IFFI.

Tulpan, Blindness, Night Train, Tranquility, Waltz with Bashir and Silent light are the films that represented the Cannes film festival. Tulpan and Night Train had won the Un Certain Regard award at the Cannes. Silent Light had got the Jury prize and was nominated for the Palme d'or at the Cannes.

Goran Markovic's "Tour" included in the Cinema of The World section had bagged the Best Director, FIPRESCI award at the Montreal film festival. The Song of Sparrows in the Competition section had bagged the best Actor Silver Bear to Reza Naji at the Berlin film festival and Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" had won the Golden lion, Golden Oscilla for best cinematography at the Venice film festival.

"The list of world class films that were screened at the premier Film festivals around the world is so long at the IFFI this year," Mr Mohan said. The film festival had a larger participation, he added. There was an increase in foreign delegates, which included delegates from China, Russia and Switzerland. This time we got many celebrities like actors, film makers and even the technicians from abroad and the country, which was a good sign, he said.

In terms of films and participation, he said IFFI had the best films and excellent participation, Mr Mohan said.

In the Competition section, Aprons, The Coffin, Akasa Kusum are the other films that had been screened at international film festivals. To add in the Cinema of the World, The Grain, Black Ice, Purgatory, Wrap Up are some of the films that had got recognition in the other film festivals.
