Thane, Nov 29 (UNI) Hundreds of employees and officials of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) today resorted to a pen-down strike to protest the attack on the Deputy Municipal Commissioner by a Congress leader here.

Following the attack on his deputy Dr Sudhir Bhatankar, Municipal Commissioner Nandakumar Jantre ordered the local police to file a complaint against the leader.

According to reports, a slum redevelopment project was planned in the Subash Nagar locality of Pokhran II. Dr Bhatankar had visited the location yesterday to conduct an inspection.

During his visit, former Congress corporator and Standing Committee chairman Bhaskar Shetty arrived and started arguing with him.

In the midst of the argument, he allegedly assaulted brutally on the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, injuring him severely.

He had recently undergone a by-pass surgery.

Following this incident, the officials of the corporation made a representation to the Mr Jantre and requested him to lodge a complaint with the police. Following which, the Vartak Nagar police registered a criminal complaint against Shetty.

It may be noted that Shetty was earlier disqualified as the corporator due to his arrogant behaviour and for submitting an invalid cast certificate.

Shetty has been charged with assault and preventing a governement servent from discharging his duty.

This was not the first time that a senior TMC officer had been assaulted. Earlier, half a dozen officials of the TMC had fallen prey to the ire of the corporators during the demolition drives.
