Kolkata, Nov 29 (UNI) Former champions Mohun Bagan struck twice inside thirty minutes in a 2-0 win against United SC to secure second place behind leaders Sporting Clube de Goa at the end of first leg of ONGC I-League at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here today.
Jose Barreto headed in the first goal in the 14th minute and captain Baichung Bhutia buttressed the tally on the 29th minutes to lead Bagan to a comfortable victory on the concluding match of the first leg.
The win fetched the city giants 21 points from 11 games in the first leg behind Sporting Clube, who have 22 points from 10 games with one match remaining at JCT in Margao.
Barreto took control of the play quickly headed home following a cross from Shylo Malsawmtluanga, who was fed by medio Marcos Pereira.
Second goal came from Bhutia's nice looking volley that sealed the fate of United SC, who remained with 12 points from eleven games.
Mohun Bagan's position at end of the first leg came with fantastic rally after two back to back defeats, three draws and six consecutive wins, thanks to a creditable coaching from Karim Bencherifa, who also helped the club to win domestic league on his first assignment.
