Residential areas in Pondy inundated

Puducherry, Nov 28 (UNI) Many residential areas in the Union Territory were marooned due to a breach in the drainage system at Krishna Nagar, following incessent rains which lashed Puducherry last night.

People in the residential areas, including Rainbow Nagar, Venkata Nagar, Chellan Nagar and Kamaraja Nagar among other could not come out as water entered the houses on the ground floor.

Puducherry received 205 mm of rainfall for the last 24 hours ending at 0830 hrs today, the local Met office said here.

For the second time sea water entered into Ouppalam and Vambakeerappalayam areas and the people were evacuated to safer places.

Areas surrounding Thengaithittu were inundated as the Velrmpet lake developed a breach. The people in the area gheraoed Welfare Minister M Kandasamy demanding food packets. The Minister, later made arrangements for food.

Meanwhile, people in six areas staged a ''road roko,'' demanding pumping out of water and food packets.

The official machinery was being geared up and steps were being taken to pump out water. Two centralised kitchens were functioning to provide food to those evacuated.

Meanwhile, the rain stopped by noon giving relief to the people in the Union Territory.

All educational institutions will remain closed till Monday, an official relese said.
