IFFI; all peripheral functions cancelled
Panaji, Nov 28 (UNI) Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat today said all the peripheral functions like the cultural shows and musical extravaganza, which were part of the International Film Festival of India 2008, were cancelled taking into account the demise of former Prime Minister V P Singh and the attacks in Mumbai.
"The state had declared seven days mourning on the demise of Singh. The Governing Council today decided to cancel all the peripheral function which were being conducted as part of the film festival," he told reporters here.
When asked if it would not send a wrong signal to the tourism industry, Mr Kamat said, "It is directly connected to the pride of the nation and a respect to former Prime Minister. Pride of the nation comes first and all other things come only next to it. The people will understand the situation".
Relating to the security arrangements in and around the IFFI, he said the security was tightened and quick reaction teams with vehicles and Armed police had been deployed at the venues.
As part of the film festival, cultural events, musical and dance fests were being held at many places like Vasco, Margao and Ponda.
