Temp dips in Northwest: Kashmir valley records coldest night

Chandigarh/Lucknow, Nov 26 (UNI) As the temperatures dipped across the Northwest region, the nights became colder with a number of frozen waterbodies in the tribal districts of Himachal Pradesh.

The Kashmir valley recorded the coldest night with a minimum temperature of minus 2.2 degrees Celsius.

As icy winds swept across the mid and upper reaches of Himachal Pradesh, a migrant labourer from Nepal died due to cold overnight at the bus stand in Rampur town of Shimla district.

'Chander Tal' and 'Suraj Tal' natural lakes of the Lahaul Spiti district along with other waterbodies in the region had frozen to huge ice bodies.

The night temperature at Keylong in Lahaul Spiti district was minus 2.5 degrees followed by Kalpa in the tribal district of Kinnaur at minus 1.6 degrees and Manali 1.8 degrees.

Bhuntur in Kullu district was cold at 2.1 degrees, Una 3.0 degrees, Sundernagar 2.9, Mandi 5.0 degrees and Dharamshala 8.1 degrees.

The capital town of Shimla, where weather remained clear, was cold at 9.1 degrees.

In the Kashmir valley, the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 2.2 degrees against 0.0 degree normal temperature during this period of winter. This was the coldest night as earlier minimum was recorded minus 1.9 last week.

According to the Met office, the maximum was recorded at 12.4 degrees, one degree below normal.

In Punjab, Adampur was the coldest place where the minimum temperature dipped to 4.4 degrees, three degrees below normal.

The night temperature in the holy city of Amritsar fell marginally and was recorded at 5.8 degrees. Ludhiana was cold at 7.1 degrees, two degrees below normal while Patiala recorded 8.2 degrees.

However, the minimum temperature at Chandigarh rose to 11.4 degrees, which was two degrees above normal.

In Haryana, Narnaul recorded 6.5 degrees, three degrees below normal, followed by Ambala at 8.5 degrees, Hisar 10.8 degrees, Rohtak and Karnal at 8.0 degrees and 9.0 degrees respectively, two degrees below normal each.

In Uttar Pradesh, weather was mainly dry in the last 24 hours, according to the Met office. Night temperature rose markedly in Meerut division, rose in Kanpur division and changed little in the remaining regions of UP.

The day temperature was appreciably below normal in Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Kanpur and Agra and were normal elsewhere.

The temperature plummeted when the westerly winds crossed the state, the Met office said.

In the last 24 hours, the minimum temperature recorded at Agra was 9.4 degrees, Kanpur and Lucknow 10 degrees each, Varanasi 10.1 degree, Gorakhpur 11.4 degree, Moradabad 12.2 degree and Bareilly 13.4 degree.

The weather in the national capital remained chilly with a minimum temperature of 9.4 degrees.

Heavy to very rains are likely to occur at most places in Tamil Nadu, south interior Karnataka, Kerala, Andaman, Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands.

Night temperature was appreciably to markedly below normal in Assam, Meghalaya, southeast Madhya Pradesh, north Chhattisgarh, some parts of Jharkhand, southwest Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha.

The northeast monsoon has been vigorous in Tamil Nadu.

Heavy to very heavy rains have occurred at most places in Tamil Nadu.
