Margao, Nov 26 (UNI) Climax Lawrence's second half goal was enough for defending champion Dempo Sports Club to get better of East Bengal by 1-0 and gain full points in the crucial ONGC-I league match at the Nehru stadium at Fatorda today.
The all-important goal for Dempo came in the 78th minute which ultimately turned out to be the match winner.
Dempo, who had dominated the play in both the halves, could have won by bigger margin but forwards were not quick in grasping the opportunities before them.
With this win, Dempo increased their points tally to 17 points and came on par with Churchill Brothers. East Bengal remained on same 12 points from as many matches.
It was a tale of missed chances for Dempo as they came with a first good move as early as in the seventh minute but Renty's header sailed over the bar off pass from Anthony Pereira.
The home team had another golden opportunity to surge ahead in the 12th minute when Roberto Mendis Silva sent a well measured pass to Renty Martin, who only to beat the rival goalkeeper, wasted time take a shot was timely cleared by one of the rival defender.
East Bengal came with good move in the 16th minute but Dempo goalkeeper Satish Kumar brought off a fine save off a shot taken by Yakubu.
After barren first half, Dempo regrouped themselves well and continued to attack, in the 64th minute Renty initiated a move and pass to Climax, who passed the ball to substitute Mboyo whose shot landed straight into the hands of the rival goalkeeper.
Dempo managed to score in the 78th minute through Climax Lawrence off a well measured cross pass, received from right flank from Renty Martin.
Later, Dempo's Climax Lawrence was adjudged the man of the match for his fine performance.
