Deep sea port important for West Bengal: Buddhadeb
Kolkata, Nov 26 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today said it was important for the state to have a deep sea port under South 24-Parganas district in Bay of Bengal, in the background of the Centre's Look East Policy.
Mr Bhattacharjee was reacting to the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) move to foray into the possibilities of setting up a deep sea port at Chittagong in Bangladesh, while speaking at the National Executive Committee Meeting, organised here by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) here.
'' The deep sea port in Chittagong will not help us. Therefore, I will take up the issue with External Affairs Minister Pranab Chakraborty. If necessary, I will take to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. It is because we have been prepared for the deep sea port and waiting for the final approval from the shipping ministry, '' Mr Bhattacharjee said.
