Congress urges SEC to conduct Municipal elections peacefully
Kolkata, Nov 26 (UNI) West Bengal unit of Congress today urged the State Election Commissioner (SEC) to peacefully conduct the upcoming municipal elections.
Election to Howrah Municipal Corporation and three municipalities in Krishnanagar, Berhampore and Jhargram is scheduled to be held on November 30.
''We have very sad experience from the previous municipal elections in Howrah that indiscriminate booth capturing, looting of EVMs, threatening and intimidating the voters by CPI(M) cadres as they create terror and panic among voters using bombs, moving from wards to wards with fire arms to register victory of their candidates which is a blow on democracy,'' Pradesh Congress acting president Pradeep Bhattacharjee said.
He also accused CPI(M) of assembling large number of people at different wards in Howrah from Kolkata and neighbouring districts to vote for their candidates.
''We also urge you to stop illegal entry for ensuring fair election'' he said.
SEC should take appropriate measures to control law and order in the areas, he added.
