Srinagar, Nov 25 (UNI) Yoga, exercise and brisk walk reduce the tendency of developing hypertension which is now almost common in the Kashmir valley because of the prevailing situation.

However, according to experts, genetic factors are thought to play a prominent role in contributing to essential hypertension.

Moreover, geo-strategic location also contributes in adding or subtracting the frequency of the disease among the people of a particular area.

For the first time the DD Kashmir organised a live phone-in programme of Dr G Q Allaqabandhm who provided online consultation and suggested remedies to patient, calling from far-flung and remote areas, including Tangamarg, Kulgam, Anantnag, Pattan, Baramulla, Magam, Kupwara, Tral, Handwara, Srinagar, Bandipore and Ganderbal.

Dr Allaqabandh said High blood pressure (HBP) or hypertension means high pressure (tension) in the arteries.

He said HBP does not mean excessive emotional tension, although emotional tension and stress can temporarily increase the blood pressure.

In reply to a question he said ''the blood pressure is normal below 120/80mm/hg, while between 120/80 mm/gh and 139/89 it is called pre-hypertension and a blood pressure of 140/90 mm/hg or above is considered high.'' Responding to other queries of the callers from different parts of the Valley, Dr Allaqabandh said that salt intake may be a particularly important factor in relation to essential hypertension in several situations.

He said excess salt may be involved in the hypertension that is associated with advancing age, African American background, obesity, hereditary (genetic) susceptibility, and kidney failure (renal insufficiency).

Suggesting precautions so as to minimize the risk of hypertension, Dr Allaqabandh said genetic factors are thought to play a prominent role in the development of essential hypertension.

Moreover, geo-strategic location also contributes in adding or subtracting the frequency of the disease among the people of a particular area.

However, there are remedies and precautions including yoga, exercise and brisk walk which reduce the tendency of developing the disease.

Meanwhile, an official of DDK Srinagar, meanwhile, said the programme received tremendous response from the viewers, who appreciated the efforts of the Kendra in bringing eminent doctors like Allaqabandh close to the people.

With patients finding it difficult to seek appointment and consultation even after standing in long queues, DD Kashmirs Doctor ''on-line'' a live phone-in programme has provided an alternative to the patients saving both their precious time and money.
